62 years old and still going to Eleuthera in the summer? Wow, how did this guy get hooked? Well, I blame it on my kid. During his junior year of high school, his biology teacher had a meeting about some marine science program called “Eleutheran Adventurers.” We really wanted him to be able to go, so I tagged along as both a student who had always been interested in marine biology, and as an extra chaperone. After initially having difficult time learning to snorkel, I adjusted and had a wonderful experience, with my son as my “buddy.” My son and I went through what can only be described as an intense bonding experience; when you rely on and trust your dive buddy that much, good things happen. I always encourage parents and offspring to sign up for an adventure together. We had such a great time that when we got back to Stevens Point, we purchased our own snorkel gear, so we were all set to go when we went the following year. We still snorkel the lakes of north central Wisconsin together, even though he is off on his own now. We do have a grandson for whom we got his own starter snorkel set, so maybe, in the not too distant future, he and I will have a chance to enjoy a similar experience. I have been going back now every year since 1998, except one. Live long and snorkel… -- B. Bell, WI

I just wanted to send a note of thanks to your entire staff for making my daughter's experience with you so amazing. She had a fabulous time, and loved it! I am a teacher so she has already spoken to me about the possibility of gathering a group of students to come down next summer! If you have more information about your program for me, I would appreciate it. -- V. Morey, MI
Thank you for the wonderful, wonderful experience you provided Ry with! He was so excited when he came home! He loved everything - the activities, the gorgeous setting, the staff, the food, classes - everything! He feels bad that he had to leave at all! He's been filling us in on the trip, and we're just so happy we sent him. He wants to come back next year! So, thank you again - you and your staff do great work! -- M.Zehner, CO

I'm not sure if you remember me, I'm Scot Stodola (I was one of the students that visited Outpost Eleuthera). I came with the Iowa group. When I first arrived at the camp i didn't really know what to expect from the camp or the staff there, but as it turned out I really loved it all. The camp was amazing, along with the staff who I learned to really like and respect. To be honest I didn't know how i would react to snorkeling for the first time, but as it turned out I had a blast, snorkeling came really easy to me and I learned really fast. To begin with I was a little nervous that I wouldn't make friends with all the other kids there and I would end up not having fun, but in the end I made some really sweet friends, and not just with the other kids but with the staff too. For me the camp was awesome. While I was there I was shocked by the great hospitality I received. I never expected it to be that nice, and I was amazed by the generosity and the hospitality I received from the moment I first stepped in the cabins to the moment I said my goodbyes. I truly miss the Outpost and you guys. In that light I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me the opportunity to go snorkeling in the Bahamas, collect sea shells, and make a lot of new friends. I know that my trip could not have been accomplished if you weren't there. I wanted to sincerely thank you for all that you have done to make it possible for my trip to the Bahamas. -- S. Stodola, IA

I Have been thinking about you folks all week, and just picturing where you were with your new class group. Today I've been dreaming of floating through Current Cut...... What a fine time our group had last week. Everyone our group has raved about their experience, and I want you to know how much I appreciated all of your work to make our adventures in Paradise just fabulous. Thank you, thank you, thank you! -- J. Brown, CO
My daughter Mollie arrived back in Colorado last night, talking a mile a minute about what a fantastic time she had with Wild Studies in the Bahamas. She was so excited about everything she got to see and do. Thanks so much! -- M. Purcell, CO
2007 will be our fifth year participating in the Wild Studies Green Experience in Costa Rica. The remote, beautiful location on the Pacific coast is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the tropical rainforest ecosystem. An amazing variety of tropical plants and animals are waiting to be discovered around the next bend, as you hike the winding trails. Scarlet macaws, spider monkeys, cat-eyed snakes, red-eyed tree frogs , blue morpho butterflies and poison dart frogs are just a few of the creatures found in the forest. To be able to see the wildlife that you have read about or seen in nature documentaries, first-hand, just a few feet away from you, is an awesome experience. The comfortable accommodations, the good food and the knowledgeable guides have made it possible for us to concentrate on seeing the wildlife and enjoying the adventure.

My name is Cindy and I teach science at a High School in a small, rural school in Northeastern Wisconsin. Several years ago, I heard about the Wild Studies program at our state science convention. I decided it would be a great opportunity for my students– plus I would get to go too! Being from such a small school and competing with other school travel programs – I have a few strategies I want to share with other teachers. First, start early and get first deposits in early. I start almost two years ahead of time recruiting students. This accomplishes a couple of things – kids (and their parents) have time to save and I know which kids are really committed to going. When planning my first trip, many students wanted to go, but dropped out at the last minute. Early recruiting and early deposits alleviate that problem. Second, recruit at neighboring schools and finally, take advantage of Tara, she is an awesome resource! This program is very worthwhile – I can hardly wait to land on Eleuthera in June of 2008 to start a new adventure with Wild Studies. -- Cindy C., WI
This is my 3rd year traveling to Costa Rica. The trip is an excellent experience for students young and not so young. The birds, the monkeys, the snakes and the rest of the wildlife that you see is a amazing. Sure, you can see the wildlife in zoos, but nothing compares to seeing them in the wild. Hiking through the rainforest, hearing the calls-- wow, I can't wait to get back. The staff is excellent and always willing to accommodate and cater to each group's wishes. The food and lodging is very good, considering the remoteness of the area. I can't wait to see the newly completed facilities. What a view-- overlooking the lagoon and the ocean.

I just got back from the Osa in Costa Rica and I wanted to send you an e-mail telling you what a wonderful trip I had. My group was from Belvidere IL. We had an incredible time. I can't believe how much I learned and we didn't do it as a class. It was just impossible to not come away with something from this trip. Everything from the food to the hikes were beyond belief. I've never enjoyed myself more. Costa Rica is a beautiful country and I'm already planning on coming back. Sitting at home makes me wish for the cold showers and muggy weather... But thank you for offering this trip. I know I would never had experienced the rain forest without this trip. -- A. Pomykala, IL
Ola Tara, thank you and thanks for all your help with the trip. WE HAD A FABULOUS TIME. If it's possible, this group of women were the BEST ever. NO conflicts, no personality conflicts. I was even moved to tears during one of hikes, when our 65 year old women was having trouble with the trail. One women took her pack to carry the rest of the trip, another women found a walking stick for her, and the youngster 33, came back and held her hand and made sure she was secure in every step she made. As a team she make it to the waterfall, and it was very special to the whole group that she did. We had women meet their challenge and step out of their comfort zones, as they did the tree traversing. Camaraderie, and encouragement by all helped they through these trying moments. We formed a "Sisterhood" that was a special bond. Reade was a wonderful guide. Knowledgeable, cheerful, fun, changing with the situations, handled the changes with ease, made last minute changes to that turn out fabulous. Jim is always a pleasure to have around. It was a great trip. Lindsey was disappointed there were no pirates. Because of the land slide we were unable to do the waterfall rappelling and it was a LONG walk back to do the night eye shines for caiman and crocks (so we never saw them). Just gives us another reason to go back another year. Mario was an AWESOME chef and the staff was ever so helpful and courteous. -- Gail C., MI (Gail has organized and led women only trips with Wild Studies for 4 years. If you are interested in participating in a women's only trip please contact us).
